🩵 What is PTSD?

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that may occur in those who have been exposed to a traumatic event or set of circumstances. They may experience this as emotionally/physically harmful or life-threatening and may affect mental, physical, social, and/or spiritual well-being.

🩵 How does it work?

PTSD is a stress and trauma related disorder that manifests when exposed to stressful or traumatic situations that then later affect their present moment. At these moments, as if they are re-living the past. For example, someone who was raped may experience flashbacks and/or nightmares. When these things happen, the person feels all the same emotions they felt during the traumatic event. PTSD looks different for everyone depending on the level of stress and traumatic exposure.

🩵 What are the symptoms associated to PTSD?

Symptoms of PTSD are grouped into 4 categories: intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in thinking and mood, and changes in physical and emotional reactions.

One may have uncontrollable memories and thoughts about the terrifying event. They may avoid people or places that remind them of the event. Such symptoms often affect their mood and ability to cope with negative thoughts and stressful situations. Those inflicted will see life through a lens of personal trauma which can greatly impact their social interactions and relationships.
